When I started this journey almost 5 years ago, I didn’t know where it would lead me.
I have always loved handmade or artisan made items. I loved that I found something that was made by one person, it had that person’s imprint on it, it was unique and made in small batches. I had something special in my hands and that made me feel special too.
As it often does, it started with a desire to make some handmade clothing for my daughter. Ana was a petite baby and nothing fitted her very well. So I decided to make some of her own clothing.
As time passed I became obsessed with fabric ~ the touch, the pattern, the print quality, the thread count, the origin, the history. Even the way a fabric made me feel made an impact!
Over time I’ve created a style where the clothing showcases the fabric. While I wanted to make classic clothing that was easy to wear and easy to care for (who doesn’t like to chuck something in the wash and not think about it much??), I wanted my clothing to be eye catching.
I now travel to Japan once a year to source fabric, and spend hours researching fabric trends from Europe and Japan to bring my customers something unique. It’s obsessive and addictive, but so much fun!
Having a handmade business has helped me discover an amazing community of friends who also appreciate handmade work, learn new skills, network, and create something out of nothing. It has helped given me a sense of self after leaving full time employment, shown my kids in real terms how hard mummy works, and even pay some bills at home!
However the journey starts, there is a huge community of Australian handmade businesses who have the same passion – they want to create something with their hands and share it with people who appreciate it.
Even if you have just started your handmade business, or you have been running a business for years, you all have something unique to offer people.
Our goal here is to help strengthen the Australian handmade community, to bring more attention and focus to this unique sector, to give it the attention it deserves! We want to bring people together, people who understand what it’s like to have that passion that drives them, and understands the nature of running a handmade business (mostly from home!).
Anh is one half of Love Australian Handmade, and also has been running her own handmade business (Ana ma Petit Tresor) for almost 5 years. She has two young children, and a husband who crazily encourages her fabric buying sprees and handmade ideas. She likens her fabric addition to drugs (but not as expensive nor illegal), and is known to sit and stare at fabric for periods of time. Anh also loves to travel, eat food, make her kids laugh, and sleep.
