Don't these pants make you happy?

How did your handmade journey begin? Can you remember or has it all disappeared in a haze of parcels, gorgeous fabrics and a now empty bank account (or is that just me)?  I have always loved browsing handmade markets and loved a good craftanoon (but who doesn’t right?!).   About 3.5 years ago, I purchased my first piece of handmade clothing for my daughter - a pair of funky boho harem pants from a market.  I’ll be honest, the price scared me at first but we wore those things to death! My husband called them her happy pants.  Now thinking about it they DID look just like the happy pants I wore as a kid in the 80s!  Each time I went to that market, the maker recognised me, we chatted and built a relationship (she ended up selling her house, buying a caravan and travelling Australia!)… it was with this first purchase that I realised that when buying handmade you gain sooo much more than just a product! I immersed myself in everything handmade and quickly lost myself in the world of Facebook buy and sell sites trawling for my next handmade hit.

2 years ago, myself and 2 other stupendous ladies who shared a passion for Australian handmade decided to start a little group called ‘For the Love of Australian Handmade’.  I realised that it wasn’t just me who thought Australian Handmade was freaking amaze-balls, and that little group now has over 40,000 members! The amount of talented makers I have since discovered is ridiculous and everyday I now discover more handmade finds. Now I understand more about what is behind handmade -  that I am buying from a person who has passion in their work, I am buying something pretty dang special, and I am supporting a small business.  I have spoken to makers and some people I have bought from have now become great friends with them.

I am in the process of transforming my wardrobe to totally handmade.  Most of the items are custom made and I FINALLY feel like I’m dressing like ME! It turns out I’m colourful, a little quirky and a lot vintage!  I love buying handmade for myself…why should my kids have all the fun?!

We want to share with you our best Australian handmade finds, we want to make it easy to shop for those special events like Christmas, first birthdays, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, and more!  We want to share with you our favourite Australian Handmade finds, we want you to get to know the makers behind the brands and how they make this stuff so awesome!

It’s our first blog entry and after some nervous anticipation I have now pressed post.  I would dearly appreciate if you could please leave us a comment to show your support for Australian Handmade or let us know what we should blog about next.

Ps 2 kids later and all these years later these very loved and worn pants STILL make me happy!

Peace, Love and Australian Handmade xx

Susan.
